About a
dozen boy scouts from McAllen's Troop 76 visited the range on Saturday, Jan.
28th.
They were there for a merit badge
qualification and a safety orientation.

The scout session took place on the 25 yard
range.

The boys received a safety briefing from
instructors from the Pharr Gun Club
before Scoutmaster, Steve Walker carefully
explained their course of fire for the day.

The scouts shot in relays of four shooters
each.
Personal instruction was offered by
Scoutmasters such as Mike Key in the photo on the right.

Pharr Gun Club rifle instructor, Joe Kertesz
took charge of the event,
running each relay and offering clear and
easy to understand range commands.

Each scout fired three shots at five small
targets at a range of 25 feet. .22 rimfire rifles were used.
Scores that qualified were submitted for
merit badges.

As you can see from the photo on the left the
small targets looked even smaller from the firing point.
Each scout was very well behaved and patiently
waited their turn.

Troop 76 provided plenty of assistant
instructors.
It was a day of fun, a little bit of stress and
lots of education.

We'd like to thank McAllen's Boy
Scout Troop 76 for helping to spread
firearms education to our community's youth.
They are using care, a firm hand and the truth.
There is no better way.
25 Yard Range is
Open!
The bullet catcher
is finished.
You may now shoot
on the 25 yard
range
provided that you
don't hit
the yellow support
poles.
These are not
targets. These are support poles holding up the bullet catcher system.
DO NOT place targets in front of these
poles!
Here you see a Club
member using the 25 yard range with the newly completed bullet catcher in
the background.
S C H E D U L E:
From Jan. 25 through about Feb. 10th:
Fabrication of parts for the 100 yd.
range bullet catcher will take place
off site. During this time we will
improve the road and parking area
if work crews can be scheduled.
We wish to get rid of the ruts in the
road and bring the general public area
up to ADA standards. This means
smooth enough for a wheelchair to
have easy access.
From about Feb. 10th - 25th:
Bullet catcher construction on the 100 yard range.
There will be NO shooting on the 100 yard
during this time. Don't call and ask for exceptions.
Accessibility to shooting on the 100 yard will be
determined by conditions at the time. When the
range is posted CLOSED, it will be closed. Shooting
will continue as usual on the 25 and 200 ranges.
Sometime in March:
Construction to begin on bullet baffles on all three ranges.
Details on range closures forthcoming.
Here's the
view of the completed structure.
You can see
that each side mates up with the protective dirt bullet stop.
Here's a shot of
the top of the 25 yard bullet catcher during construction.
It is solid pea
gravel.
On the left we see
some of the machinery used to build the 25 yard bullet catcher.
On the right we
see the work crew working on the top cover after the gravel was installed.
On the left we see
the work crew installing the galvanized aluminum top cover.
The gravel sits on
top of thick plastic sheeting.
Underneath the
plastic is a sheet steel.
On the right we
see the crew laying down individual sheets of aluminum.
Earlier in the
process you could see the east wing of the frame taking shape.
On the right was the open space where the west wing
flap was soon to be built.
In an
earlier photo you can
see the front poles will support the weight of the top cover.
When finished the
top cover will look similar to the eyebrow catchers on the firing line.
The color of
the bullet catchers complement the colors on the firing line.
Vertical poles
are yellow and the horizontal beams are blue.
Work started on
the 25 yard range on Jan. 3rd.
Above we see
concrete being poured to anchor the supports for the
bullet catcher
system on the 25 yard range.
In the background
are the eyebrow catchers and shade covers
on the 25 and 100
yard ranges.
Above you see a worker shoveling the initial groove
It was a bit of intense hand work. The support for the
for the upper support structure for the bullet catcher.
bullet catcher system is similar to an awning. The
structure is held up by support poles and by the bullet stop
dirt mound itself.
Here's a close up
of one of the holes which was filled with concrete.
The concrete base
will support a pole to support the weight of the new structure.
This is the main
frame of the 200 yard bullet catcher.
As you can see the
construction is very similar to the eyebrow catchers
found on all of
the firing lines.
We are using
square steel tubing for support poles
and steel "I"
beams for the bullet catcher frame.
The frame that you
see here will contain
the same gravel filler as the eyebrow
catchers.
The open gap seen
to the left will be closed off when the project is completed.
As you can see
care has been taken to make sure the bullet catcher also
extends over the
gaps that might be found
to the right and left of the target
area.
This same
procedure will be used for the bullet catchers
on the 25 yard and
100 yard ranges.
Current gate/membership cards will
expire on Sept. 30, 2012.
REMEMBER!!!!
Your current gate/membership
card will remain
good as long as you keep up your
membership.
The system has been worked out
so that
you can keep your current
card for years.
Cowboy Action Shooting
Match
Sunday Feb. 12, 2011
10:00 AM
Okay, pardner...time to mosey on
down to the ol' corral!
Time to dress up as a TV or movie cowboy (or cowgirl)
and just have fun with
those shootin' irons.
We shoot at paper and steel targets.
We use firearms designed before 1900.
Yep, that's right. Real, old-fashioned Cowboy guns!
Modern remakes are okay
to use.
Each shooter uses two
handguns, one shotgun
and a rifle or carbine
chambered in a straight wall pistol cartridge.
We're in it just for the
fun.
You will need about 50
rounds of ammo for the handguns and rifle
and one box of shells
for the shotgun.
and don't forget
eye and ear protection...
and maybe
drinking water and sunscreen.

The new front
gate card access system is on!
The system was
rebuilt during January.
Your access card is the key
to enter and leave the range.
The process is easy.
* Drive up to the gate, just as in the past.
* Get out of your vehicle, just as in the past.
* Walk up to the gate, just as in the past.
* But DON'T use the metal key.
* Instead hold your new access card up next to the card reader.
* The reader is on the post with the latch.
* It looks kind of like a black cell phone inside a metal housing.
* You can see the body of the reader between two thick red stripes.
* Hold your card between the two red stripes.
* Hold the card close to the black card reader inside.
* You may have to move your card sideways a couple of times.
* You will hear a click as the gate lock unlatches.
* Then swing the gate open, just as in the past.
* Drive in, just as in the past.
* Then close the gate, just as in the past.
* Simply push the hasp into the jaws of the lock and it will do the rest.
* Leave the range the very same way.

Please study this photo !

DO NOT use any of the portable target stands on the
100 or 200 yard ranges.
People have NOT been careful
using these stands and that has changed the rules for everybody.
The
portable stands are now restricted for use on the 25 yard range.
N
O T I C E !
The suggested list of newly revised Club
safety rules were debated, amended and accepted
by a majority vote of members present at the April business meeting.
All members should
have received a copy of the suggested safety rules revision inside their
Spring 2010
newsletter. For a complete listing of what was passed and the changes
made to the
mailing, click the link below.
Two changes were also made to the club By-Laws. A third possible
change is pending.
Language on the third change is included in the document below. This
language may
change over the next few days.
NOW
We have finally
solved the problem of where to shoot at 50 yards on our range.
We have newly
installed 50 yard target holders located
on the left side of
the 100 yard range.
The 50
yard target holders look like this:
And
here are the rules!
* You sit on any of the four shooting tables which are found directly in
front of the new 50 yard target holders.
* Place cardboard ONLY on the upper portion of the new 50 yard target
holders.
* Place your target on this cardboard.
* Then fire a shot to make sure that your round does two things:
1) hits the intended paper target
2) lands in the dirt in the bullet stop in the back
* Then you continue to enjoy shooting at 50 yards.
* DO NOT PLACE TARGETS IN THE LOWER PORTION OF THESE
NEW TARGET HOLDERS.
* Shooting through a target placed in the lower portion may cause a
ricochet.
* Ricochets are not allowed under any circumstances.
* If you are caught doing this, your card and key will be taken away from
you on the spot.
Here's another photo!
As you can see the
upper portion of the new 50 yard target holders
lines up perfectly
with allowing a bullet to pass through the
paper target and
continue it's way to be safely contained in the bullet stop.
Cardboard can be
found on the 25 yard range
or you may bring
some with you.
A staple gun is
really helpful.
Don't leave home
without it.

About the Pharr Rifle and
Pistol Club, Inc.
The Pharr Rifle & Pistol Club is also known as the Pharr Gun Club.
We come from all walks of life and both sexes. We have organized for
the purpose of enjoying and fostering the shooting sports. Putting
SAFETY FIRST, we get together to enjoy the sport of competition as
well.
There has yet to be a case when a new shooter hasn't also become a new
friend. We prefer not to be political and are definitely not militant.
Our
sport is spectator oriented so we can be in the public eye. For this
reason
please be advised that we will need your help in keeping language,
dress,
and demeanor respectable when at the range or at a match. The Pharr Gun
Club
range remains a family setting.
Club business meetings are on the first Tuesday of every month. The
meetings
are held at 7:30 pm at the Kiwanis Meeting Hall at the corner of
Bluebonnet
and Park in Pharr (location map).
